And so it's been a while since I last posted on this blog, probably because it's been a while since I last drummed up one of those Occupy Art or Black Lives Matter Art Shows to be found in that city of New York. And on this day finds itself as Occupy Wall Street Day one thousand and something, I think. And Occupy Wall Street and that all things police brutality and beyond movement Black Lives Matter are still moving fast. And so in between reading the headline news of the day, that Black Lives Matter Art Show went to Northside Festival, or should it be said that Black Lives Matter went to Northside Art or Williamsburg Walks. Well, it was one of them that Black Lives Matter Show foiund itself at this past weekend, or should it be called that Black Lives Matter art installation that found itself at Williamsburg Walks to be found in that neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York on that street of Bedford Avenue. And so what else is there that I can say about this Black Lives Matter Art Show that has not already been said in Black Lives Matter Art Show time, except to type some of the "Your Thoughts on Black Lives Matter" statements that have been shared on some of those banners that find themselves posted in those photos and video above. And some of those thoughts on Black Lives Matter from a couple of those banners read like as follows:
1. We all feel and feelings have no color.
2. The color of my skin does not make me inferior; it makes me beautiful.
3. All Lives Matter
4. Muy lindo pais y mas con amigas.
5. The skin I'm in is beautiful, bold plus black.
6. I aint black!
5. End police brutality
6. I'm 17 years old, so young, black, male, and in America. I don't always feel like an American but an "outkast." I'm also afraid of these meant to protect me. Why?
7. People arent treated right and that matters.
8. There's history, power and strength of my skin color. Always love your black in all ways.
9. No God. No Peace. Know God. Know Peace.
10. Jesus
11. Together we can!!!
12. Black Lives Matter
13. Love me for my heart. Not my skin.
14. All people of color should be treated fairly
15. Race Really Doesn't Exist
16. We all do well when we do well
17. Black lives doesn't mean: Black ppl> white ppl. It means: Black ppl = white ppl
18. Every plase where you set your foot will be yours. Deut 11:24 #blacklivesmatter
19. Exude the energy you wish to breathe. Love all, for it will always return. Believe in your soul.
20. Just bc someone is born a different color doesn't mean they shouldn't have the same opportunities. Black is beautiful.
21. Racists are assholes.
22. LOVE, opportunity, respect for all people, equally + equitably! DIGNITY for all, JOY for all, PEACE for all.
23. All Lives Matter
24. If this were true, then we wouldn't be having this conversation. (see #23). #workingtowardsit
25. JUSTICE!
26. So much I can say... I'm a product of the 70's bus protests to allow black children to attend and intergrate all white schools. It was an eye opening experience. We were told "We don't want your kind here. And so 40 years later we still must stand up and demand that :Black Lives Matter"!!!
27. 500 years later and we're still trying to make this point?! We need to come together and heal now. Educate about the true history. Share stories. Work for change.
28. Just because blacks are blacks doesn't mean they have to be treated bad.
29. HISTORY: LEARN WHERE YOU COME FROM. - #BLM
30. I AM BLACK AND MY LIFE DOES MATTER!
And the list of "Your Thoughts On Black Lives Matter" statements goes on and on....
And a description for that show that usually reads something like
The Black Lives Matter Art Show invites you to create your own art posters from art materials and supplies that will be available for everyone. Participants are encouraged to talk about the Black Lives Matter movement as well as the artwork they have created through the open mic. Black Lives Matter Art Show is inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement to discuss, expand scope, perspective and inspiration towards an ongoing series of future culture jams and events around this theme and time
Only this Black Lives Matter Art Show didn't have one of those open mic's, and spent one day enduring the rain or the threat or rain, and the other day enduring the wind wanting to blow all those posters and banners away. And there was an attempt to vend, or accept donations for that DecorForU #berniesanders, #blacklivesmatter, #occupywallstreet, #brooklyn and #williamsburg necklaces, magnets and key chains for a suggested donation of $1 each. And if I must blogger say, this Northside Art part of that Northside Festival Rocks. And that Northside Festival event describes itself as
For seven days every June, over 100,000 creative and cultural trendsetters converge in Brooklyn to uncover the future of music, innovation and content; with over 400 bands, 150 speakers and 100 content creators. The Northside Festival encompasses a constellation of venues – small clubs, outdoor spaces, boutique hotels, local movie theatres and more. A single day might include discovering your favorite band, the next big start up, or the best film you’ve seen all year.
And that Northside Art at Williamsburg Walks Facebook event invite reads something like as follows:
Please join us at the walks! On June 11th and 12th, Williamsburg’s main drag Bedford Avenue will transform into a public park (from Metropolitan Avenue to N 12th Street). Art Activations and Community Organizations will bring the street to life with sculptures, live painting, performances and art installations.
